Saniuk To Lead UNO Tennis Teams

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Omaha athletic department announced today that Mike Saniuk, currently the head coach of the UNO men's tennis team, will add women's tennis head coach to his duties beginning this year.
"Mike is a tremendous tennis coach with a lot of passion and energy, and we are excited about the direction of both programs under his guidance," said Mike Kemp, Associate Athletic Director who oversees the tennis teams. "In just one year, he improved the men's win total by three matches and took the team farther into the conference tournament than UNO has ever been before. We are confident that Mike will lead both the men's and women's programs successfully as we transition to Division I."
Saniuk replaces Bill Nichols, who retired earlier this month after 11 years as the only women's head coach in school history. Saniuk was an assistant coach for both the men and women for two years before being named the men's head coach in June of 2010. Last season, the Bellevue, Neb., native led the Mavericks to a 9-9 overall record and a semifinal appearance at the MIAA Tournament.
"I am really excited to be given the chance to coach both the men's and women's programs at UNO," Saniuk said. "To be honest, it is a dream come true. With the support of the Omaha tennis community and at UNO, I know that our program has the chance to become something really special in the state. UNO's best tennis is in the near future."
Saniuk is a 2006 graduate of Nebraska-Kearney, where he earned all-conference honorable mention and helped the Lopers to two NCAA Division II Sweet 16 appearances. He attended Omaha Gross Catholic High School, where he helped the Cougars win the 2000 Nebraska Class B state title.
UNO will officially become a member of The Summit League on July 1 of this year and will begin playing a conference schedule in the fall of 2012.
