Mavs Conclude Spring Season

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - The UNO men's soccer team wrapped up its first full season as a program with their final spring scrimmage on Saturday.
The Mavericks defeated Iowa Western Community College 4-1 in Council Bluffs to end the spring. Logan Mendez had two goals, and Devin Diego added a goal and three assists in the win. Cody Thayer rounded out the scoring for UNO.
The game got off to a fast start with four goals in the first 15 minutes. UNO struck first when Diego served in a ball from the left wing and Mendez volleyed it in from close range. IWCC answered quickly off of a free kick that was headed past goalie Josh Christensen.
But the Mavs scored three unanswered to take control of the game. Diego took a free kick from near the corner flag and again connected with Mendez, who finished a loose ball in the box to make it 2-1.
Diego got into the scoring column when he took a cross from Vance Rookwood and volleyed it into the corner. Thayer capped the scoring late in the second half when he headed home a Diego corner kick.
The Mavs posted a 3-2 record in the spring and will now turn their focus to preseason in early August, as they prepare for their first full Summit League schedule.
