OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO women's soccer team battled defending Summit League champion Oakland valiantly for 90 minutes, but fell 1-0 in a nailbiter at the UNO Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
After falling down a goal in the first half, the Mavs controlled possession after halftime and threatened the Oakland net numerous times but were unable to find the equalizer. Omaha dropped to 1-11 overall and 1-1 in The Summit League. Oakland improved to 4-3-3 and 1-0 in The Summit League.
Oakland struck for its goal in the 16th minute. Abigail Haelewyn got free on the right side of the box and took a pass from Meghan Reynolds. Haelewyn slotted the ball into the left side of the net from 14 yards out past goalkeeper Sarah Warren, who entered the game in the 14th minute after Meaghan Clark left with an injury.
The Golden Grizzlies, the 2011 Summit League Tournament champions, outshot UNO 8-4 in the first half, but shots on goal were even at 2-2.
The Mavericks controlled play throughout the second half in search of the tying goal. UNO recorded the first three shots of the second half and nearly tied the game when Anna Sibson's shot from 10 yards out deflected off the right post out of bounds. Sibson also forced a save off a header, and Danielle Archuleta tested goalkeeper Shannon Coley.
In the final minutes, Melanie McCormick's header after a cross went just over the crossbar.
Oakland finished with a 13-9 edge in shots, while Omaha owned a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, not counting Sibson's shot off the post. Warren finished with one save. Archuleta had two shots on goal.
The Mavs hit the road next weekend for games at South Dakota and Kansas City on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Head Coach Don Klosterman needs one win to reach the 200 milestone.
