The UNO men's soccer team returns home this weekend to host Seattle on Sunday at the UNO Soccer Field at 5 p.m. The Mavs were on the road last weekend at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic in Peoria, Ill., where they suffered two defeats. The last time the Mavericks were at home, they trounced Bellevue 4-0 for the first home win in team history. UNO will look to duplicate that success against the Redhawks, who enter with a 1-2 record. Live stats for the match will be available at OMavs.com. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. UNO students get in free with their MavCard. Sunday's game is sponsored by MidAmerican Energy Company.
Series History
Sunday's meeting will be the first between the two schools.
Making Strides
Just three games into the 2012 season, the Mavs have shown drastic improvement from 2011, when they went 1-11-1 in the program's first year of existence. In three games this year, the Mavericks have scored six goals, which equals the final goal total through 13 games last season. Omaha's players have combined for 20 points already this season, five more than the 15 recorded all last year. Chava Garcia's two goals and four points are greater than any UNO point total from all of last season, and Vance Rookwood and Giovanni Giattino are the first players to record multiple assists in a season with two each. Nine different players have recorded points for the Mavs this season. Only seven got on the scoresheet last year.
Grosey Sets Saves Record
Junior goalkeeper Matt Grosey set a school record with 12 saves at Bradley on Sept. 2. Grosey's 12 saves topped the old mark of 10 saves by Josh Christensen, set last year at Illinois Chicago on Oct. 16, 2011.
Garcia, Miller Named to All-Tournament Team
Midfielder Chava Garcia and defender Nick Miller were named to the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic All-Tournament Team following the tournament, hosted by Bradley from Aug. 31-Sept. 2 in Peoria, Ill. Both Garcia and Miller had goals for the Mavs in a 3-2 loss to Bradley on Sept. 2.
Rookwood Earns Player of the Week Honor
Sophomore midfielder Vance Rookwood was named the College Sports Madness Summit League Player of the Week for his play during the week of Aug. 20-26. Rookwood had a header goal and one assist on Aug. 26 to lead the Mavericks to a season-opening 4-0 win over Bellevue at the UNO Soccer Field. Rookwood led the Mavs with six shots in the game.
Next Up for the Mavs
UNO travels to Riverside, Calif., next weekend for the UC Riverside Tournament. The Mavericks will play San Diego State on Friday at 7 p.m. (CT), and UC Riverside on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
Last Time Out
PEORIA, Ill. - Bradley battled back from two one-goal deficits to defeat the UNO men's soccer team 3-2 last Sunday at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic. Nick Miller and Chava Garcia scored first-half goals for the Mavericks to give them two separate one-goal leads, but the Braves overwhelmed UNO in the second half and despite a school-record 12 saves by Matt Grosey, were able to scrape out the come-from-behind win. Miller gave UNO a perfect start, knocking home a corner kick in the seventh minute for his first career goal. Giovanni Giattino played in a cross and Felipe da Silva got to the ball first before Miller put it away for a 1-0 Maverick lead. Bradley battled back to tie the game in the 13th minute when Desmond Campbell collected a loose ball inside the six-yard box and buried it, assisted by Ross Williams. But the Mavs had the final say in the first half. Garcia deflected a shot by Vance Rookwood into the net in the 28th minute for his second goal of the season. Rookwood picked up his second assist of the season, and the Mavs led 2-1 at the break. Bradley outshot UNO 10-8 in the first half, but both teams put four on target. In the second half, Bradley persistently threatened the Mavs until the 63rd minute, when UNO was whistled for a foul in the penalty area. Keegan Balle drilled home the penalty kick to tie the game 2-2. The Braves had outshot UNO 13-0 up to that point in the second half, but it was a penalty kick they needed to break through against Grosey. Campbell then scored his second goal of the game, this one the game-winner, in the 76th minute, assisted by Williams and Jason Lesch.
Scouting Seattle
Seattle is 1-2 this season with a win over Cal Poly and losses at Gonzaga and Sacramento State. The Redhawks have a goal apiece from Miguel Gonzalez and Race Sciabica. Jake Feener has played every minute in net and has 18 saves and a 1.33 goals against average. Peter Fewing is in his 19th season overall as the head coach at Seattle, but he is in his first season since stepping down in 2005. Fewing has a 221-127-26 record. He is assisted by Ed Moore.
Day of Firsts
UNO's season-opening 4-0 win over Bellevue on Aug. 26 saw a lot of firsts for the second-year Maverick program. It was the first home victory in school history. It was the first shutout in school history. It was the first time the Mavs have scored more than two goals in a regular-season game. It also marked the first-career goals for freshmen Chava Garcia and Emir Alihodzic.
Shooting Range
The Mavs' 21 shots against Bellevue were a school record, topping last year's high of 16 at Stetson on Nov. 5. UNO placed six shots on goal, with four finding the back of the net. Vance Rookwood led UNO with six shots in the opener. Chava Garcia had five, and Craig Buettner had four.
Preseason Honors
Midfielder Vance Rookwood and forward Craig Buettner were named to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Summit League Second Team. Rookwood led UNO last year with three points on one goal and one assist. Buettner had one goal after joining the team midway through the season after an open tryout.
Welcome to The Summit League
The 2012 season marks UNO's first with a full Summit League schedule. UNO will play all seven Summit League foes once, starting with a Sept. 22 game at defending Summit League champion Western Illinois. Although the Mavericks will appear in the Summit League standings, UNO cannot qualify for the Summit League Championship or the NCAA Tournament until 2015-16.
Experienced But Young
Eight starters return for the Mavericks, including redshirt freshman Logan Mendez, who started the first three games and missed the rest of the season due to injury. Mendez scored the first goal in school history in a 2-1 win over UMKC and despite missing the final 10 games, still finished third on the team with five shots on goal. Although the number of returning starters is high, the Mavs' nine returning players consist of one redshirt freshman, five sophomores and three juniors.
A Whole New Batch
While nine Mavericks return from last year's inaugural team, 13 fresh faces are new to the program this fall. Five newcomers got a head start and enrolled at UNO for the 2012 spring semester and trained with the Mavs throughout the spring - junior goalkeeper Matt Grosey, junior forward Thomas Torres, sophomore defender Nick Miller, sophomore defender Felipe da Silva and freshman midfielder Devin Diego. The Mavs added two Division I transfers as well. Creighton Prep alum Jake Linden will be a freshman for the Mavs after redshirting one year at Xavier. Houston Hoffman will be a junior after playing two years at Northern Illinois. The rest of the Mavs' incoming class comprises six true freshmen - Emir Alihodzic, Chava Garcia, Giovanni Giattino, Danny Gustafson, Lucas Hake and Jesus Perez.
Lessons Learned
After a 1-11-1 record in their inaugural season as a program, the Mavericks will use the adversity they faced last year to continue to build the program from the ground up. The Mavs started to click toward the end of the 2011 season with three goals in the final three games after scoring three times through the first 10 games. UNO picked up a 1-1 draw at Missouri Valley Conference foe SIU Edwardsville in late October, its only result of the season after the 2-1 season-opening win at UMKC.
Mavs Picked Eighth in Summit League Preseason Poll
UNO was picked to finish eighth in The Summit League Preseason Poll, which was determined by a vote of the league's eight head coaches. Defending champion Western Illinois is the favorite to repeat as champions. The Fighting Leathernecks, who claimed both the 2011 regular season and postseason championships, received five first-place votes and totaled 46 points. Kansas City had one first-place vote and finished second with 39 points to edge out Oakland, who received the remaining two first-place votes and had 38 points. Oral Roberts, IUPUI, Fort Wayne and Eastern Illinois finished fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. League newcomer Omaha rounded out the poll. The top four teams in the regular-season standings, except for UNO, will compete for The Summit League Men's Soccer Championship in Macomb, Ill., Nov. 9 & 11.
