
Mavs Knock Off Creighton; Fall in PKs to Hastings

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO men's soccer team beat Creighton, 2-1, in the first round of the Omaha Cup on Saturday at Morrison Stadium in spring exhibition play. The Mavericks then played to a 1-1 draw with Hastings in the final before falling in penalty kicks, 5-3.
Against Creighton, the Mavs fell behind 1-0 but scored two goals within 10 minutes of each other to take a 2-1 lead for their first-ever win over the Bluejays in any regular season or exhibition competition since becoming a program two years ago. Creighton is coming off two consecutive NCAA College Cup appearances.
UNO got on the board when Vance Rookwood hustled to a ball and forced a handball in the box from a Creighton defender. Emir Alihodzic put away the penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1. With 14 minutes remaining, Logan Mendez scored for a 2-1 lead and the eventual game-winner.
In the final against Hastings, Rookwood continued his strong day by scoring the Mavs' goal. The Broncos converted all five of their penalty kicks though in the shootout, while UNO connected on three of four attempts.
