Late PK Gives Drake 4-3 Win Over Mavericks

DES MOINES, Iowa - In a back and forth game, Drake was awarded a penalty kick with 16 seconds left in a tie match and converted it for a 4-3 win over the Omaha men's soccer team Friday night.

The Mavericks (1-3) had a one-goal lead on two separate occasions, but the Bulldogs (1-3-1) battled back both times and snuck away with a win in the final seconds on their home field.

Omaha got on the board first in the 14th minute when Craig Buettner buried a chance after a Chava Garcia corner kick. That goal came just three minutes after goalkeeper Matt Grosey had stoned Drake on its first of two penalty kicks that it was awarded on the night.

In the 24th minute, Drake tied the game when Danton Irelan scored off of a give and go with Jarred Arde. The Bulldogs snatched the lead before halftime when Arde scored from close range in the 31st minute.

In the second half, the Mavericks broke through with back-to-back goals to take regain a 3-2 lead. Vance Rookwood headed home a pass from Garcia in the 58th minute to tie the match. Then Garcia scored the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute, rebounding a shot by Buettner that was saved to score his first goal of the season. Garcia had a hand in all three Maverick goals with one goal and two assists on the night.

But in the 83rd minute, Drake answered with a goal from Nick Marshall off of a set piece. Then with 16 seconds to play, UNO was whistled for a foul in the box. Arde converted the penalty kick to give the Bulldogs the 4-3 win.

Drake had a slight 19-18 edge in shots, while shots on goal were even at 10-10.

The Mavs return home to host SIUE on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the UNO Soccer Field.
