NORMAN, Okla. – The Omaha men's tennis team finished its fall schedule with its first appearance at the USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships last weekend at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Pavilion in Norman, Okla.
Erik Anderson, Marko Minic, and Ignace Warson all advanced to the qualifying draw in the singles bracket. Anderson was knocked out by Kansas City's Uldis Gaismins 6-0, 6-3. In the consolation round, Anderson defeated Western Illinois' Surya Sawhney 6-1, 6-1. Minic was eliminated by Jake Perkins 6-1, 6-4. Warson lost a close match with Alex Pozo of Southern Illinos-Carbondale 6-4, 6-3.
Tyler Mercier received an automatic bid to the main draw. Mercier earned a first round victory over Daniel Santos of Tulsa 7-5, 7-6 (3). Mercier was then knocked out by 10th seeded Tin Ostojic of Wichita State 6-0, 6-0.
“I'm very happy with how we competed,” commented head coach Tyson Thomas. “Erik had a tough draw in the first round. As freshman, Marko and Ignace were able to get a feel for top tier Division I tennis and I'm pleased with how they handled themselves.”
Omaha did not pick up a win in the doubles draw. Coach Thomas was very upbeat about the performance stating, “We are very clear with what we need to improve on in doubles and now it's time to get to work.”
The men's tennis team will return to the courts in January when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. For a pair of duals.
