Grand Canyon Sweeps Doubleheader From Mavericks

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Grand Canyon swept a doubleheader from the Omaha baseball team on Saturday, defeating the Mavericks 9-2 and 14-0 at Brazell Stadium. The Mavericks are now 5-6 (0-0 Summit League) on the year, while the Antelopes improve to 6-8 (0-0 WAC).
GAME 1 -- GRAND CANYON 9, OMAHA 2
Junior Zach Williamsen (0-1) took the loss in the opening game, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on three hits. He tallied three strikeouts with no walks over 4.2 innings of work. The win went to Andrew Naderer (2-2), who surrendered two runs on three hits over 8.1 innings.
Sophomore Alex Schultz went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored, while sophomores Clayton Taylor and Connor Messinger each drove in one run apiece.
The Mavericks took an early 2-0 lead to open the game. In the top of the first, sophomore Cole Gruber scored on an RBI groundout by Taylor, and Schultz crossed on Messinger's sacrifice fly to left.
Williamsen cruised to hold Grand Canyon hitless until the fifth, when the Antelopes exploded for five runs to go up 5-2. They added four more in the seventh for a final score of 9-2.
Michael Pomeroy finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while David Walker was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and another driven in.
GAME 2 -- GRAND CANYON 14, OMAHA 0
In the second game, Ethan Evanko (2-1) picked up the win, going 6.0 innings and holding Omaha to no runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. Freshman Mitch Larson (0-1) was pinned with the loss, as GCU scored eight runs -- four earned -- off six hits in the first inning.
Grand Canyon collected 16 hits to Omaha's four in game two. Gruber and seniors Dylan Casey, Caleb Palensky and Brett Bass each accounted for one.
Walker and Humberto Aranda both went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI to lead the 'Lopes. Grand Canyon plated eight runs in the first inning, followed by two more in the third and four in the fifth for a final score of 14-0 in seven innings of play.
