OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha men's tennis will play a 25-match schedule leading up to the 2016 Summit League Championships, head coach Tyson Thomas announced.
"This schedule is full of teams that are going to push us to compete to the best of our abilities from start to finish," Thomas said. "The guys had a solid showing in fall events and, even after competition finished, they have continued to work hard on the court. Our ultimate focus is on preparing for the Summit League Championships."
The Mavericks open the 2016 spring slate on Jan. 15 at North Dakota, before traveling to Nebraska for a Jan. 23 match. Omaha opens a five-match homestand starting Jan. 24 against Doane College. Defending Summit League champion Denver visits the Miracle Hill Tennis Center on Jan. 31 to open conference play.
After a quick trip to DeKalb, Ill. to face Northern Illinois and Cleveland State, Omaha returns home for a six-match homestand featuring Creighton (Feb. 28), Nebraska (Mar. 5), and Lamar (Mar. 15).
UNO will travel to Louisiana over Spring Break for six matches. The trip is highlighted with matches against Nicholls State (Mar. 22) and the University of New Orleans (Mar. 23). The Mavs will play a doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Mar. 25) to wrap up the trip.
UNO ends the regular season with four straight conference matches. The Mavericks welcome Western Illinois (Apr. 3) and IUPUI (Apr. 9) before heading to Oral Roberts (Apr. 16) and South Dakota State (Apr. 22).
"We look forward to a wonderful season," said Thomas, who enters his second season at the helm. "We have some new schools on our schedule that we haven't played in many years, if at all. It will be tough, with stiff competition and a host of away matches, but it will also be worth it as we continue to push for our success."
Added Thomas, "We have a number of new players on the team, and we are very excited to see the immediate impact they will have. We have one goal in mind, and that is winning a Summit League Championship."
This year's Summit League Men's Tennis Championship will take place April 28-30 at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha.
