Grigorescu Qualifies for NCAA Men's Singles Tournament

OMAHA, Neb. – Razvan Grigorescu of the Omaha men's tennis program has earned a spot in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Bracket, announced Wednesday evening. This is the first time an individual has been chosen to represent UNO in the singles tournament.
"Qualifying for the NCAAs is an incredible accomplishment for Razvan, and I couldn't be prouder of him," said head coach Tyson Thomas. "He set this goal at the beginning of the year and to see all of his hard work pay off is a great reward for him."
Winning the Summit League's Newcomer of the Year award this season, Grigorescu notched a 19-6 record overall this season and a 15-5 mark in dual matches, playing at No. 1 singles.
Ranked in the top 100 in the ITA singles rankings a majority of the season, Grigorescu won 10 of his first 11 matches to start the season and was ranked as high as No. 53. He knocked off three opponents from Power Five schools during that time: No. 18 Spencer Papa of Oklahoma (6-4, 3-6, 1-0), Toby Boyer of Nebraska (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) and Josh Silverstein of Iowa (6-4, 6-7, 1-0).
The singles competition will be conducted May 24-29 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 18-23. The University of Georgia will serve as host.
All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 completed singles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
