NORMAN, Okla. – The Omaha men's tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA Central Regionals on Friday afternoon in Norman, Okla.
The Mavericks opened play with a strong start, posting a combined 5-1 record in singles action on Thursday.
"This was a good weekend to take away a lot of things," said director of tennis Adam Summitt. "We started off slow in doubles and could not get any traction going. The guys bounced back and had some amazing singles matches in the first round with some of the best play I have seen from them in my short time. Coach Barlow and I are excited to keep pushing these guys forward."
Due to weather, outdoor courts were unavailable and consolation and extra matches were cancelled.
A trio of Mavericks garnered two-set victories on Thursday as Abdoul Ouattara defeated Oral Roberts' Andy Guymon (6-1, 6-1), Matt Hulme won over Creighton's Luke Moorhead (7-5, 6-1) and Nathan Reekie defeated Creighton's Nicholas Campbell (6-1, 6-2).
Alvaro Quintana won in three sets over Wichita State's Bruno Serra (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) and Davis Lawley tallied a victory over Arkansas' Josh Bortnick (4-6, 6-4, 6-4).
In round of 64 play, Outtara fell 6-7(11), 2-6 to Oklahoma's Jake Van Emburgh and Reekie lost 3-6, 2-6 to Oklahoma's Mason Beiler while Hulme dropped a three-set heartbreaker to Oklahoma State's Emile Hudd, 6-3, 4-6, 5-7.
In doubles action, Quintana and Ethan Henry won by forfeit over Creighton before losing to Wichita State in the round of 32, 8-4.
The Mavericks wrap up their fall slate at Drake next weekend.
