OMAHA - The Omaha men's soccer team (8-3-3, 2-0-1) heads to St. Paul, Minnesota, on Saturday to face St. Thomas (4-7-3-,0-2-1) in the Mavs' final regular season road match of the season. Kickoff is set for noon on Saturday on the Summit League Network.
THE PRIMER - Omaha hits the road for the final time in the regular season on Saturday as it heads to the Twin Cities to face St. Thomas. The Tommies enter the match at 4-7-3 but have lost four of their last five matches and have not scored a goal in their last five.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE - Coach Donovan Dowling has orchestrated one of the more impressive turnarounds in college soccer this season, putting the Mavericks in position to compete for a Summit League title after winning just three games last season. With a win, Omaha will clinch a top-two seed in the Summit League Tournament and set up a match against No. 5 Kansas City on Halloween for the Summit League regular-season title. The Mavericks can also clinch a top-two seed with a tie and a UMass loss.
SERIES SNAPSHOT - Omaha has dominated the overall series, holding a 5-1 advantage against the Tommies and winning the last five meetings by a combined score of 11-1.
IN THE REARVIEW - Italo Jenkins' brace on Tuesday night led Omaha to its fourth consecutive victory, a 3-1 win over Drake at Caniglia Field. Jenkins converted a penalty kick in the 18th minute to open the scoring, then Maguire Perkins intercepted a pass and flicked it past the goalkeeper to put the Mavericks ahead 2-0. After Drake cut the deficit to one, Jenkins headed home a perfect corner kick from Lucas Foreman to seal the win.
CHECK THE RANKS - Omaha checked in at No. 4 in the West Region in the United Soccer Coaches poll, its highest ranking of the season.
RECORD-BREAKING SEASON - A key to turning around a program is improving the offense, and the Mavericks have done just that. Omaha has doubled its goal total from last season and boasts one of the nation's top offenses. The Mavericks have already broken the previous school record of 30 goals in a season, scoring 36 goals this year. That total ranks first in the Summit League and sixth nationally. Omaha also leads the conference in goals per game, points per game, total points and shots per game. The Mavericks rank among the top 16 nationally in each of those categories. Omaha has scored at least three goals in five of its last six matches.
NOT JUST WINNING... DOMINATING - The Mavericks have enjoyed quite the turnaround this season after winning just three matches last year. Omaha has won eight matches and is looking to tie the school record of 10 wins in a season. The Mavericks lead the conference and rank 10th nationally in goal differential, outscoring their opponents by 20 goals this season.
JENKINS HAVING HISTORIC SEASON - Italo Jenkins has been spectacular this season and is looking to cement his place among the top goal-scorers in program history. Jenkins has scored eight goals this season, the second-most in school history. He needs one more goal to tie the school record and two more to break it. Jenkins has scored six goals in his last four matches.
KEEP YOUR EYES OUT FOR - Senior midfielder Brett Perkins (Gretna, Neb.) is in his fourth year with the Mavericks and serves as a team captain. Last season, he recorded two assists while playing 930 minutes. Perkins has recorded six goals and two assists this season. He is the only remaining member of the 2023 Omaha squad that won the Summit League Tournament.
Senior goalkeeper Kamy Ndione (Osaka, Japan) is back between the posts for Omaha. Last season, he played 900 minutes, recording 33 saves and two shutouts. Ndione has posted five clean sheets this season and recorded a career-high nine saves against Western Illinois. He already has 46 saves this season, surpassing his total from last year.
MAGUIRE PERKINS COMING ON STRONG - Maguire Perkins has been coming on strong lately, scoring three goals in his last five games while adding an assist. The junior from Gretna, Neb., has five goals this season after scoring three over his first two seasons.
SPREADING THE LOVE - The Mavericks have shared the scoring load this season, with 13 different players finding the back of the net and eight recording an assist. Italo Jenkins leads the way with eight goals.
FEARLESS LEADERS - Dowling enters his fifth season at the helm of the Mavericks with a 34-33-16 record. He is joined by associate head coach Josh McReynolds, who is in his fifth season, assistant coach Ed Gordon, who is in his third season, and assistant coach Brendan Dally, who is in his second season.
WHO'S ON DECK - Omaha will host No. 5 Kansas City on Halloween at Caniglia Field for Senior Night. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
