Mavericks travel to Kearney for UNK Open Saturday
The Mavericks are hoping the weather is a little more cooperative this weekend as they head to Kearney, Neb. to compete in the Nebraska-Kearney Open Saturday Dec. 8. The tournament is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., and is the first of two trips the UNO wrestling team will make to Kearney this season, as the Lopers will host the Mavs for a duel in February.

The Mavericks are ranked No. 7 according to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches' Association, which released its first regular-season poll Thursday. The poll also places five Mavs among the top eight in the individual rankings. All-American Austin Boehm is ranked second at 184 pounds, while fellow All-American Sim Bribieseca is sixth at 141 pounds. Jacob Marrs (197) is fourth, Ross Taplin (174) and Tony Lewis (285) are both ranked eighth in their respective weight classes.
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 28th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 268-106-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.

Inclement weather and poor road conditions forced the cancellation of the Northern Iowa Open, which was to have been held on Sunday Dec. 2 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
On Deck
The Mavericks will break for the holiday and return to action Dec. 29-30 when they travel to Chicago, Ill. to compete in the Midlands Tournament.
