Taylor Pick Highlights Mav Scrimmage
UNO's defense dominated a young offensive unit at Caniglia Field Saturday, giving up just a field goal and scoring on a 42-yard pass interception by junior cornerback Reed Taylor. Still, head coach Pat Behrns had reasons to be optimistic about both sides of the football after the 55-minute, 45-play scrimmage.
"The injuries we've had in the offensive line gave some young players a chance to gain some experience," Behrns said. "That created some execution problems for us, but it also gave us a chance to create some depth for next fall."
The offense collected just 117 yards in total offense while committing five penalties. The only points came on redshirt freshman Greg Zuerlein's 50-yard field goal on the fourth possession.
The only touchdown came near the end of the scrimmage when Taylor stepped in front of a Greg Wunderlich pass in the left flat and dashed 42 yards untouched for the score.
"The quarterbacks didn't have a good day," Behrns said. "We have to start making some plays, especially in the passing game."
Senior starter Zach Miller completed 4 of 5 passes for 23 yards, redshirt freshman Brian Gralheer 3 of 4 for 31 yards and Wunderlcih 3 of 11 for 24 yards.
"On the other hand," Behrns said. "Our secondary is playing pretty well, and that had something to do with some dropped passes and the numbers."
Among the changes was a temporary switch of sophomore defensive end Paul Finochiaro to offensive tackle, a spot that has five players on the sidelines. In all, the Mavericks have eight offensive linemen, including three starters, on the sidelines this spring.
Sophomore tailback Robert Wesley led the rushing attack with 36 yards on 10 carries.
"There were bits and pieces of good things today," Behrns said.
The Mavericks return to the practice field on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons before climaxing the spring session with their spring game next Saturday at 1 p.m.
