Five Mavs Named To Football Gazette Regional Teams
PITTSBURG, Kan. - Five members of the 2009 UNO football team were named to the Don Hansen's Football Gazette NCAA Division II All-Super Region Four Team, it was released on Friday. Highlighting the list are UNO tight end #Mike Higgins# and freshman running back #Levi Terrell# who were both named to the First Team Offense.
The recognition completes a season full of awards for Higgins, a Daktronics Division II Second Team All-American. Higgins led the Mavericks in receiving with 50 catches for 848 yards and nine touchdowns, all career highs. He was fourth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in receptions in league games (8) and fourth in reception yardage per game (72.8). The native of Pickrell, Neb. also ranked in the top ten in the league in receptions per game, yards per catch and total receptions. He was named to the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association First Team this season.
In addition, Higgins was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team and a 2008 MIAA Academic All-Conference pick. He was a member of the 2007 North Central Conference Honor Roll. He has a 3.96 grade point average in civil engineering.
Terrell, a true freshman,was named the MIAA’s Freshman of the Year and a member of the Offensive First Team. He led the Mavericks in rushing with 235 carries for 1,182 yards in eight games. He was second on the team with seven touchdowns. In just seven MIAA games this season, Terrell ran away with the league’s rushing title, amassing 1,098 yards on 207 carries and averaging 156.9 yards/game. He averaged 42 yards more per game than the next leading rusher. The native of DeSoto, Mo. also led all players in attempts and all purpose yards (165.4/gm) and finished in a tie for six with seven rushing touchdowns.
Place kicker #Greg Zuerlein# and offensive linemen #Dennis Bergland# and #Harrison Lingenfelter# were all named to the Third Team Offense. It's yet another award for Zuerlein who was also named to the American Football Coaches Association Division II All-American Team.
