Mavs Top USD, Clinch No. 2 Seed in NCC Tourney

OMAHA, Neb.- The eight-ranked Mavs did all they could Saturday, defeating South Dakota 2-0 at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben to wrap up North Central Conference play, but fell short of hosting the NCC tournament after Minnesota State, Mankato defeated St. Cloud State 4-1 to clinch the regular season title. The Mavs (14-1-2, 5-1-1 NCC) clinched the No. 2 seed and will play No. 3 seed North Dakota Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. in the tournament's opening round. MSU will play fourth-seeded South Dakota State at 11:30 a.m.
Junior Ashley Grace scored her team-leading 12th goal midway through the first half on a pass from junior Molly Herzberg and freshman Haley Fries added her ninth of the year at the 58:28 mark. Sophomore Amy Price made three saves, recording her 11th shutout of the year, and improved her goals against average to 0.61. The Mavs outshot the Coyotes 25-7.
One remaining regular season game awaits the Mavs next Sunday at Rockhurst. A win would help their chances to repeat as the top seed in the Central Region. In the first regional poll released two weeks ago, the Mavs were tied with UND for the top spot. NCAA tournament selections are announced Nov. 10.
