Mavs Sneak Past Coyotes, 2-1

The Mavs used a pair of second-half goals to defeat South Dakota 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben in North Central Conference action. The win extends No. 5 UNO's second longest winning streak to 11 games and puts its record at 11-1-0 and 7-0-0 in the conference. The Mavs came into the game ranked first in the NCAA Central Region poll while USD (10-4-0, 3-3-0 NCC) is third.
The Mavericks out shot USD 6-1 in the first half but failed to find the back of the net. In the second half the Mavs got on the board when junior forward Beth McGill launched a corner kick from the left side into the front, right side of the box at 53:16. Senior defender Meghan Pile was right there to tap it in for her first goal of the year. McGill then got one of her own two minutes later on a pass from Tara Wegehaupt to tie for the team lead in goals with her ninth. It was also her third game-winner.
UNO allowed the Coyotes just five shots all day but USD took advantage of one of them when Sarah Halbach fired one in from the right side on a pass from Jessica Schnell. The goal cut UNO's lead in half with just over 10 minutes remaining and marked the first allowed at home this year.
Senior goalkeeper Amy Price stopped two shots and earned the win in goal. UNO led the Coyotes 7-1 on corner kicks, 16-5 on shots and 8-3 on shots on goal.
The Mavs will take one St. Cloud State Saturday at 1 p.m. as they continue NCC action.
