McGill Nets Hat Trick in UNO Win

Beth McGill scored three times for her second career hat trick as the sixth-ranked Mavericks defeated Minnesota State 4-0 Sunday afternoon during Senior Day at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben. The win broke an eight-game shutout streak for the Mavericks of Minnesota State. UNO (13-1-0, 9-0-0 NCC) took over the top spot in the North Central Conference after No. 16 MSU went 0-1-1 this weekend, suffering its first NCC blemishes. The win for UNO, ranked first in the NCAA Central Region poll, extended its winning streak to 13 games and broke MSU's 10-game unbeaten streak. MSU is No. 2 in the region.
McGill, a junior forward, started off the scoring in the seventh minute when senior defender Becca Fritz sent a ball in from midfield to the far right corner of the field. McGill dribbled the ball in towards the net and shot it five yards out at a sharp angle to break MSU's streak of over 753 minutes without allowing a goal. The win gave UNO a 1-0 edge as they played against the wind in the first half.
After the teams switched sides and the Mavs played with the wind at their backs in the second half, they reverted to their trend of scoring late and often. McGill added her second goal at 75:16 when sophomore Brandie Beale fed her the ball in the box and she shot it in from 10 yards out. McGill then completed the hat trick at 76:43 when she hooked a low free kick into the back of the net. She set up from the left side of the goal and sent it in around the MSU defense with Beale there to block out the goalkeeper's view. Beale then scored one of her own when senior goalkeeper Amy Price took advantage of the wind and punted the ball over everyone's head and into the feet of Beale. She dribbled it forward and fired it in from 15 yards out.
McGill now leads the team with 29 points and Beale is right behind her with 27. Fritz earned her fourth career assist and Price's strong leg led her to her fifth career assist from in goal. Price played the first 82 minutes, making two saves, to earn the 65th win of her career.
Joining Fritz and Price before the game for Senior Day ceremonies were Meghan Pile and Christen Boeckel.
The Mavericks will close out the home portion of the regular season Friday at 2 p.m. when they host North Dakota.
