7th-Ranked Mavs Headed to SCSU Saturday

The Mavericks will bring an eight-game winning streak and perfect 4-0-0 conference record into an NCC matchup at St. Cloud State Saturday at 1 p.m. Nebraska-Omaha won three games on the road last week to move to 8-1-0 and remain the top team in the Central Region and No. 7 team in the nation. SCSU sits at 4-7-1 and 1-3-1 in the North Central Conference after splitting a pair of games last week.
Sophomore forward Brandie Beale netted two of the Maverick game-winners last week and added an assist for five points as she won her third NCC offensive player of the week honor. Junior forward Beth McGill added a pair of goals. The Mavs are out shooting their conference opponents 20.3-4.0 and have given up just one goal in the four games.
UNO is undefeated all-time in six games against the Huskies and is out scoring them 31-5.

Junior forward Beth McGill scored twice for the Mavericks to lead them to a 2-1 win at Wayne State last Wednesday. The Mavs defeated the Wildcats for the sixth straight time. McGill scored her fifth and sixth goals and now has 13 points. McGill scored first in the 17th minute off a corner kick and then added her second unassisted 10 minutes into the second half. Nebraska-Omaha held off WSC after it scored in the 64th minute. The Mavs came away with a 20-8 advantage on shots and held the Wildcats to just three on goal. Senior goalkeeper Amy Price made two saves for UNO as she improved to 5-1-1.
The Mavericks scored three times in the second half as they overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat South Dakota 3-1 last Friday. The Mavs took just three first-half shots and went into the break down 1-0 after USD converted a penalty kick in the 12th minute. Less than five minutes into the second half UNO junior Rachel Waterhouse scored her second goal of the year, unassisted, to tie the game. The Mavs then converted a penalty kick of their own when Brandie Beale knocked in her team-leading seventh of the year in the 71st minute. The goal was her third game-winner of the year. Freshman Amanda Iwansky then gave UNO some insurance when she scored on a pass from freshman Tara Wegehaupt eight minutes later. The goal was Iwansky's third of the year and Wegehaupt's assist represented her first collegiate point.
The Mavericks scored three times in the second half for the second time last weekend as they defeated 24th-ranked North Dakota 3-0 last Sunday. The Mavs waited more than 72 minutes to score their first goal but went on to score all three in 12 minutes. Junior Amber Richardson opened it up with her second goal of the year, unassisted at 72:42. Iwansky then put in her fourth of the year five minutes later off an assist from Beale. In the 85th minute Beale added her team-leading seventh of the year, also unassisted. Beale and Iwansky have both scored a goal in each of the last two games. The Mavs out shot UND 22-7 and kept the Fighting Sioux to just one shot in the second half. Price earned her seventh win this year and third solo shutout.
UNO stays put at No. 7 in nation, first in the region
UNO remained the top team in the Central Region in the NSCAA poll and stayed at No. 7 in the national poll. The Mavs debuted at No. 4 nationally, but after a season-opening loss they dropped to 22nd. The Mavs have since won eight straight games to climb back into the top 10. UNO is the only NCC team in the national poll while two other teams from the Central Region, Missouri Southern and Winona State, are also ranked.
The Mavs have been the top regional team for four straight weeks and, with a win this weekend, should hold that same spot when the NCAA's regional rankings come out next week. The top team in each region at the end of the regular season hosts a four-team NCAA regional. The Mavs have won the Central Region tournament and have advanced all the way to the final four each of the last three years.
About this weekend's opponent
St. Cloud State is 4-7-1 this year and 1-3-1 in the NCC after defeating Minnesota Duluth last week. Mallory Strong and Cassi Johnson lead the Huskies with nine points each. Strong got hers off four goals and an assist while Johnson has three goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Stephanie Brendel, the current NCC defensive player of the week and two-time winner of the award, has played every minute in goal for SCSU and is giving up 1.53 goals per 90 minutes with a pair of shutouts.

Sophomore forward Brandie Beale is the North Central Conference scoring leader with 0.89 goals per game, 2.22 points per game and 4.44 shots per game. She is also second in the league with four assists and four game-winning goals.
Beale earned her third NCC offensive player of the week honor after scoring two game-winners last week and adding an assist.
Beale had a big day against Augustana as she recorded her third career hat trick and added two assists for a career-high eight points. She earned conference offensive player of the week honors that week for the second straight time. As just a sophomore, she already has 56 points off 23 goals and 10 assists.
Freshman Iwansky is breaking through opponents' defense
Maverick freshman midfielder Amanada Iwansky is third on the team with 10 points off four goals and two assists. She scored twice last week and six times in the nine games this year and is ninth in the NCC in points per game.
The Columbus, Neb., native was a three-sport athlete at Columbus High School, earning 12 letters and making 11 appearances in the state tournament, all while earning a 4.0 GPA.
Mavs are dominating shots/SOG
Nebraska-Omaha is once again using a strong defense to allow its offense to set up and build its attack. The Mavs are allowing an average of just 5.2 shots per game and 3.4 on goal while the offense is putting up numbers nearly four times that much. UNO is scoring 2.78 goals per game while allowing just 0.78. Since losing their season-opener, the Mavs are out scoring opponents 23-4 and have a 12.5-2.8 advantage on shots on goal.
Few chances to catch the Mavs at home this year
UNO has just six games scheduled this year at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben. The Mavericks just have played a two-game homestand and they wrap up the home schedule with four straight games in the end of October. UNO was 10-2-0 last year at home, including two wins as it hosted and won the North Central Conference tournament.
