Mavs Sweep Wayne State; Advance in Regional

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Sophomore middle blocker Carlie Christensen and senior outside hitter Ashley Freeman combined for 31 kills to lead the 23rd-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team to a 32-30, 30-23, 31-29 win over Wayne State in first round action of the NCAA II North Central Regional being held on the campus of Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn. The Mavericks, who are seeded third in the seven-team Regional, improved to 20-7 with the victory.
Christensen pounded a match-high 16 kills while hitting .467 with just two errors in 30 attempts. She also added three blocks. Freeman notched 15 kills and hit .371 with four blocks.
Led by senior middle blocker Briana Ritter's match-high seven block assists, the Mavericks held a 10-6 advantage in total team blocks while holding the Wildcats to a .136 hitting percentage, compared to UNO's .299 hitting clip.
Senior setter Christie Johnson had a solid match, dishing out 45 assists, while adding four digs, two service aces and two blocks. Defensively, the Mavericks were led by senior libero Chelsea Miller's match-high 12 digs.
Nebraska-Omaha will battle fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth, the tournament's No. 2 seed in semi-final action on Friday, Nov. 18, beginning at 6 p.m. The two teams split regular season matches with both squads winning at home. Minnesota Duluth won its second-consecutive North Central Conference title, finishing with an 11-1 league record. The Bulldogs are 26-4 overall. UNO finished second in the NCC standings at 10-2.
The winner of the NCAA II North Central Regional will advance to the Elite Eight to be held on the campus of one of the participating schools on Dec. 1-3.
