Mavs Tie, Advance in a Shootout

OMAHA, Neb. -- Beth McGill's second goal of the game, with 58 seconds to play, forced an overtime and the Mavericks then survived a shootout with Washburn to advance to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals against Grand Valley State Nov. 11 at noon CST.
Officially, the game will go down as a 2-2 tie after the teams played through two 10-minute overtimes. UNO converted three of four penalty kicks in the overtime to just one for Washburn.
No. 1 ranked UNO, now 19-0-2, will play at Grand Valley State next Saturday in the quarterfinals as it continues to try and defend its national championship.
Washburn, 15-1-6, took the lead at 22:56 on a goal in the box by Jessica Mainz on a pass from Ashley Taylor.
McGill, UNO's career-leading scorer and the MVP in the North Central Conference the past two seasons, slipped the ball past goalkeeper Jenna Hatlestad at 30:39 to tie the match.
Washburn reclaimed the advantage when Jolene Silovsky was able to dribble around UNO goalkeeper Ellen Petersen, who had come out to play the ball. Mainz earned the assist on the goal, which came at 69:31.
UNO conintued to apply heavy pressure in the closing minutes. The winning play started on the right side where Branie Beale gained control and fed the ball into the box. Ali Portell's shot banged off the post and McGill kicked in the rebound.
The Mavericks nearly won the game in the final minute of the second overtime period when Lindsey Nealon, who entered the game because of an injury just seconds before, had a shot bounce off a defender in the box.
In the shootout, Petersen made a save on Mainz and McGill scored in the first round. Meagan Horvath then scored past Petersen, but Beale matched her with a goal. Lisa Fahey's shot went over the crossbar, but Portell was stopped by Hatlestad. Petersen made her second save, stopping Jenna Lawless on a diving stop near the right post and UNO sophomore Tara Wegehaupt scored, giving UNO a 3-1 edge.
This will be the Mavericks' fifth-straight trip to the national quarterfinal match. UNO defeated Grand Valley State, 2-0, in last year's quarterfinal, played in Omaha in the only previous meeting between the two teams.
