Mavs Lose Heartbreaker at Minnesota State

MANKATO,Minn. -- Despite a career-night by junior middle blocker Carlie Christensen, the 12th-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team lost a hard-fought marathon match at Minnesota State 3-2 (30-24, 27-30, 31-33, 30-24, 16-14) Saturday night in North Central Conference action. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 10-4 on the season and 0-2 in the NCC.
The Mavericks squandered two five-point leads in the decisive fifth game. Two kills by Nicole McLeod and another by Ellen Thommes helped give UNO an 8-3 advantage at the side change. After MSU fought back to within 8-5, the Mavs widened the gap back to five points with a kill by Kelli Goeser and a service ace by Kayla Jansen. Two MSU kills and a service aces brought Minnesota State to within two points at 10-8. Two Christensen kills gave UNO match point at 14-13. However, a kill by MSU's Cassie Wolpern and attack errors by McLeod and Thommes gave MSU the match.
Christensen was the bright spot for the Maverick offense as she collected a career-high 23 kills on .500 hitting, while adding three blocks and a service ace.
Senior Christina Reicks recorded her team-high eighth double-double on the season with 15 kills and 22 digs. However, Reicks committed 11 attack errors and hit just .075 on the night.
McLeod added 13 kills, six assists, and two blocks in the loss. Goeser and Thommes were also in double figures with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Senior libero Stacie Wemhoff collected a career-high 27 digs for the UNO defense.
Nebraska-Omaha was outblocked 11-6 in the match and MSU held a 95-88 advantage in digs while also outhitting UNO .255 to .219.
The Mavericks return to action on Thursday, Sept. 21, in their home opener when they entertain No. 21 Nebraska-Kearney at 7 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse.
