Second-Half Goals Lift Mavs Over Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Mavericks broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of second-half goals Friday afternoon to open North Central Conference play with a 3-1 win over Augustana. Beth McGill scored twice to boost UNO to 5-0 before Saturday's home match at Ak-Sar-Ben against Texas Woman's University at 1 p.m.
McGill scored on a direct kick 33:19 into the game, but the Vikings (1-4) tied the contest early in the second half out of a scramble in the box on a goal by Steph Ayers at the 47:30 mark of the game.
Niya Branch gave UNO the lead when she scored her first goal after Amber Richardson's direct kick at the 74:30 mark. Richardson's kick hit a defender and Branch took advantage, poking in the loose ball for her second goal of the season.
McGill sewed up the win with a long goal in the final minute from 25 yards out. The goal, at 89:12, was her sixth of the year and 42nd of her career, leaving her three shy of the school mark set by Stephanie Kruse (1999-2002).
UNO outshot the Vikings 38-2 in attempts and 18-2 in shots on goal. Viking goalkeeper Lisa Jarovski made 15 saves.
