Mavs Top Defending Champion Metro State, 2-0

Early-morning rains may have dampened the playing field, but not the resolve of the University of Nebraska-Omaha soccer team, as the Mavericks defeated the defending national champions, No. 19 Metro State, 2-0, Friday afternoon at the UNO Soccer Field.
UNO (5-5) struck first, as junior Casey Bigsby received a pass from Dani McCawley, dribbled into the box, sidestepped a defender, then buried a shot into the top-right corner at the 13:38 mark. It was Bigsby's fourth goal of the season, and her second game-winner, while McCawley notched her first assist.
The game was a defensive battle much of the game on the soggy field, although the Mavs did manage 10 shots in the first half. UNO's defense held the Roadrunners (8-3-1) to just two shots in the first half, and six overall. Three of Metro State's shots were on net, but Ellen Petersen deflected all of them for her second shutout of the season.
Brandie Beale finally gave the Mavericks an insurance goal at the 82:12 mark, taking a pass from Amanda Iwansky, dribbling right to the slot and scoring from the top of the goal box. It was Beale's third goal of the year, and Iwansky's third assist.
UNO returns to North Central Conference action Sunday at 2 p.m. with a match against South Dakota. Metro State will also play another match at the UNO Soccer Field, facing Washburn for a neutral-site contest, Sunday at noon.
