Mavs Open Year with 2 California Tests

The Mavericks will begin regular season play with a pair of matches in California this weekend. UNO opens the season Friday with a 9 p.m. (CDT) assignment against Cal State-Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif., and then will square off at UC-San Diego Sunday night at 9 CDT.
UNO posted a 19-1-2 record last season, advancing the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. Coach Don Klosterman returns eight starters and 13 letterwinners from that squad.
Dominguez Hills was 11-8-2 last year, while San Diego also advanced to the national quarterfinal match with a 20-2-2 record.
San Diego, under coach Brian McManus, won NCAA Division II titles in 2001 and 2002. He also led the school to Division III championships five times.
This will be the first meetings ever for UNO with each of the teams. It's also the season-opener for each of the schools.
UNO's key losses included two-time third-team All-American Beth McGill, the school's all-time leading scorer, along with starters Amber Richardson and Whitney Hill. The Mavericks return senior goalkeeper Ellen Petersen, who led Division II with a 0.36 goals against average, along with junior forward Amanda Iwansky, who tallied 10 goals and 11 assists. Senior forward Brandie Beale had 8 goals, 10 assists and junior midfielder Casey Bigsby 6 goals and 4 assists last season.
UNO will open its home schedule on Friday, Aug. 31, with a 5 p.m. match against Regis at the Mavericks' new home field at 68th and Spring Streets.
