Mavs Fall Again to Ranked Foe

LAKELAND, Fla. - Ellen Thommes continued her hot hitting but the Mavericks fell to a ranked opponent for the second time Friday as No. 14 Florida Southern beat them, 28-26, 25-27, 25-23, 25-17 in the day's final match of the FSC Classic.
Thommes had a team-best 13 kills and she hit .417 while Lizzy Mach hit .625 with 11 kills and one error in 16 tries. The Mavs hit .289 as a team while Florida Southern had a .333 percentage.
Sara Kampschnieder had 15 digs to lead the defense while Natalie Ebke added 11.
The first three sets featured 20 ties and 10 lead changes and the Mavs had a chance to a take a 2-1 set lead in the third. They led 15-13 but then a 5-1 run gave FSC an 18-16 lead and the Mavs didn't get within two points until set point at 24-23. The Mocasins then put it away with a kill.
The Mocasins led the entire fourth set and after a 10-4 run they held a 16-7 advantage and never let UNO within seven points of the lead.
Anna Greenwood led four FSC players in double figure kills with 19.
The Mavericks will continue action at the Florida Southern Classic Saturday at 10 a.m. Central against Bemidji State and at 1 p.m. against Grand Valley State.
