OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (9-7-1, 9-5-1 MIAA) plays its final regular season game on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Emporia State at 1 p.m. The Mavericks will be looking for their fourth straight win as they end regular season play.
The Standings
Entering the final regular season game behind only Central Missouri and Truman State in the MIAA standings, UNO has now reeled off three straight victories in an effort to reach postseason contention.
MIAA No. 1 Central Missouri continues to rise above the competition, compiling an undefeated record so far this season. At 16-0 overall, and a 14-0 mark against MIAA action, the Jennies have already clinched the 2010 MIAA Championship.
Truman has won four of its last five games and has a strong hold at No. 2 in the MIAA standings with a 8-2-5 overall record and a 7-1-5 mark against MIAA opponents.
The Series
The Mavericks are 6-0-1 all-time against Emporia State including a pair of wins last year against the Hornets. UNO handed ESU its eighth loss of this season on Oct. 7, defeating the Hornets, 3-1 at UNO Soccer Field. In that game, junior forward Hilary Horvatic broke through with a pair of goals for UNO. As a team the Mavericks outshot the Hornets 15-2.
UNO has outscored ESU 20-3 all-time in the seven meetings between the two teams. The Mavericks are 2-0-1 all-time when playing in Emporia, Kanas.
Scouting The Hornets
The Hornets will will travel to Missouri Western on Nov. 4 before hosting the Mavericks on Saturday. ESU is looking for its second win of the season. The team is 1-10-5, and 1-9-4 in conference play this year and has been outscored 31-13 in 16 games this season.
Freshman forward Amanda Penney leads the team with three goals and junior midfielder Sarah Anderson is leading with two asssists. The Hornets have lost four games this season by one goal and have five ties this season.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman is in his 12th season at the helm of the Maverick soccer team. He has compiled a 192-52-10 overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2009).
Jim Schneiderhahn, in his second year as coach for Emporia State, has the Hornets looking for their second win of the season. Before coaching at ESU, Schneiderhahn was the recruiting coordinator and keepers coach at NCAA Division I Tulane for the 2005 season.
Youth Emerging in 2010
Sophomore defender Danielle Archuleta has come on strong this season, scoring four goals in the last five games for the Mavericks. The Columbus, Nebraska, native has scored five goals this season, tying her with junior forward Hilary Horvatic for the team lead. She has also kicked two game-winning goals this year and has one assist.
Several freshmen are maturing early for the Mavericks, including midfielder Megan Kingston and Monica Bosiljevac. The two have combined for eight goals and 10 assists this season, with Kingston assisting seven and knocking in two game-winners.
Freshman Katie Pickinpaugh showed a glimpse of greatness in a game against Southwest Baptist on Oct. 23, scoring her first three goals of the season in a lopsided 7-2 victory at home. Pickingpaugh had previously missed eight games due to injury.
Junior forward Hilary Horvatic remains near the top of the statistical leaderboard for the Mavericks. Horvatic has compiled five goals and three assists this season. Junior midfielder Haley Renshaw is now tied with Kingston for the team lead with seven assists this season. The Millard North product has dished out three in the last three games.
Lauren Fox Providing Years of Excellence
After being named to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District Seven third team on Tuesday, senior goalkeeper Lauren Fox will end her regular season career as a Maverick on Saturday. Fellow senior Becky Heffling also will end her regular season collegiate play in Emporia, Kan.
Fox has started all 17 games for the Mavericks this season, posting a record of 9-7-1 with a 1.20 goals-against average and a .796 save percentage. She has four shutouts this year and has stopped 74 shots in more than 1,400 minutes in the box.
For her career, Fox ranks second all-time in UNO history with 32 wins and 189 saves. She is third all-time in career shutouts with 18 and ranks fourth with a career goals-against average of 1.09.
Heffling, a midfielder from Johnston, Iowa, will enter the game with a pair of goals and one assist in her career at UNO. She has played in 16 games this season as a non-starter.
