Kearney, Neb. - Just a day after the loss to Nebraska-Kearney, the UNO men's tennis team took one of two matches on Friday at Harmon Park in Kearney, Neb. The Mavs grabbed victory number five against Metro State College of Denver early this morning by a score of 5-4 before being shut out by Mesa State in the afternoon, 9-0. After the two duals, UNO's overall record moved to 5-4.
The match against Metro State featured back and forth action as both No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles lost their bouts against their opponents, before the team inked out the victory with late heroics. Chase Petersen became the team leader in overall singles victories when he won at No. 3 singles against Ryan Campbell of Metro State, 6-0, 6-2. John Diamantis capped off the singles competition when he won at No. 6 singles against Mattia Ferrari of the Roadrunners, 6-0, 6-3.
The doubles competition included a win in No. 2 doubles when sophomore Jon McQuistan and freshman Eric McKnight defeated the Roadrunner pairing, 9-7. The win moves the pairing to 4-2 overall in doubles play.
The afternoon contest against Mesa State College proved to be much different as UNO was shut out for the second time this season. In No. 1 singles, Drew Mercier was defeated when he met up with Jordan Chomko of Mesa State, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Chase Petersen, who had won earlier in the day, lost his contest in No. 3 singles against Andres Hernandez, 6-2, 7-6.
UNO's rough afternoon continued when No. 1 doubles pairing Drew Mercier and Chase Petersen were defeated by Jordan Chomko and Nick Provenza of Mesa, 8-4.
The UNO Mavericks will continue their season as they move to MIAA conference play next weekend when they take on Southwest Baptist University in Missouri. The match against the Bearcats is scheduled for April 3.
