BOLIVAR, Mo. – The UNO volleyball team suffered a 3-0 sweep at Southwest Baptist Saturday night, falling 22-25, 16-25, 22-25 at Meyer Sports Center. With the loss, Nebraska-Omaha drops to 8-3 (1-2 MIAA) on the season, while SBU improved to 6-4 (1-1 MIAA).
Senior outside hitter Kayla Uhing led the way offensively, finishing with 10 kills and 11 digs, which marked her seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Ebke added nine kills, while freshmen Abby Sorensen and Megan Hutson each had five apiece. Junior setter Emily Myers also tallied 28 assists.
Defensively, junior libero Angie Reicks put up 24 digs, and Sorensen topped the effort at the net with three blocks.
SBU had three players finish in double-figure kills – Ashley Jurgensmeyer (12), Jenna Isaacs (11) and Kylie Heim (10). Jurgensmeyer was an offensive force for the Bearcats with a .478 hitting percentage, and setter Brianna Wallace's 30 assists helped Southwest Baptist to a .315 mark for the night.
Although they did not enjoy a long lead in the first game, the Mavs kept the score manageable and within four points. They evened the score at 22-all with a kill by Kayla Uhing, but an SBU kill, a UNO attack error and a service ace helped the Bearcats squeak by with a 25-22 win.
In game two, SBU ran out to an early advantage, but the Mavs nearly evened the score at 11-10. Southwest then went on an 8-4 run and put the set away at 25-16, largely due to a match-high .429 hitting effort.
The third and final game was another challenge for the Maverick defense, as SBU tacked on a .359 hitting percentage. Jurgensmeyer hit .600 on her way to six kills, while Ebke kept UNO in the game with seven kills of her own. Nebraska-Omaha took an early lead at 8-5, but the momentum switched midway when the Bearcats scored six straight points to make it 16-12. Ebke added four late kills to tie it at 21-21, but Southwest Baptist took the final game, 25-22.
UNO returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 21, traveling to Washburn. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Topeka, Kan.
