Mavs Open MIAA Play at Home on Thursday

OMAHA, Neb.- The University of Nebraska at Omaha soccer team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MIAA) will begin MIAA action with its home opener against Missouri Western (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MIAA) on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 11, the Mavericks travel to Truman State (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAA) to compete in their first conference road game of the season at 12 p.m.
The Series
The Mavericks are 3-0-1 all-time against the Griffons. UNO defeated Missouri Western 4-2 on Sept. 10 last season, but could not break through a 1-1 tie on Oct. 15. The Mavericks have outscored the Griffons a combined 10-3 in the four previous meetings, including two shutouts in 2008 (1-0, 4-0).
UNO owns a 12-6 all-time record against Truman. The two teams split the series meeting last season with each school winning on its home field. The Mavs defeated the Bulldogs 4-1 at UNO Soccer Field on Sept. 12, but were shut out 1-0 in Kirksville, Mo., on Sept. 26. The last meeting between the two came on Nov. 13 in the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament when the Bulldogs knocked the Mavericks out of post-season play with a 1-0 victory in Canyon, Texas.
Scouting The Griffons and Bulldogs
The Missouri Western Griffons enter Thursday's match 0-2 on the year. MWSU was in action last weekend at the MIAA/Lone Star Challenge. In its first match, MWSU fell 3-2 in overtime to East Central University on Sept. 3. The Griffons closed out the weekend with a 1-0 loss against Angelo State University on Sept. 5. Midfielder Audrey Henderson led MWSU with two goals against East Central.
Alongside UNO,Truman competed in the Broncho Invite, hosted by Central Oklahoma last weekend. TSU finished the weekend splitting games against Midwestern State and Central Oklahoma. The Bulldogs dropped their opener against Midwestern State 3-2, but topped host Central Oklahoma 2-1. Senior midfielder Beth Bystrom led TSU with two goals and an assist on the weekend, and earned MIAA co-player of the week honors.
The Coaches
Head coach Don Klosterman enters his 12th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 183-47-9 overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2009). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship. During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005).
Missouri Western is coached by Jeff Hansen who is in his fifth year as head coach. He led the Griffons to an 8-6-2 record in 2009, and a 6-8-2 record in the MIAA. MWSU is 0-2 this season under Hansen.
Truman is coached by Mike Cannon who enters his 18th season as the Bulldogs women's soccer coach. With a career record of 232-81-30, Cannon is the winningest coach in Truman women's soccer history and was ranked eighth in victories among all-time Division II coaches entering the 2010 fall season. Cannon has led the Bulldogs to a 107-16-13 record all-time in eleven seasons of MIAA action.

The Mavericks return home and continue MIAA play when they face Washburn on Sept.16 at 4 p.m. The Lady Blues were tabbed a preseason No. 4 selection by the conference coaches in 2010. Last season the Mavericks swept Washburn, shutting out the Lady Blues in both contests.
