The UNO women's soccer team will play its only exhibition match of the 2011 season this Saturday, Aug. 13, as the Mavericks travel up the road to face the Creighton Bluejays at Morrison Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission to the exhibition match is $7 for adults and $4 for youth. The Mavs, playing in their first season as a Division I program, open the regular season Aug. 19 at Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Scouting the Competition: Creighton Bluejays
Head Coach: Bruce Erickson
2010 Record: 15-4-2 (5-1-0 MVC)
Last Game: L, 2-4 at Minnesota (NCAA 1st Round, 11/12/10)
Creighton is the defending Missouri Valley Conference champion, both regular season and tournament, and the Bluejays lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2010 to Minnesota, 4-2. The Bluejays return their top four scorers from last year, with the group combining for 34 of the Jays' 50 goals.
Leading the way is 2010 MVC Player of the Year Brittney Neumann (9g, 5a) and senior forward Andrea Zuniga, who had nine goals and nine assists for a team-high 27 points. Creighton also returns three starters on the back line and two goalies with starting experience in Katie Jo Swanson and Alicia Montgomery.
Mavs Excited for Challenging First Season in Division I
UNO head coach Don Klosterman is all for breaking new ground. As the only head coach in the 12-year history of UNO women's soccer, Klosterman has had his share of firsts – first game, first win, first conference championship, first national championship. He'll add to that list this season when the Mavericks play their first games as a Division I program.
“We're going to approach this as a championship season,” said Klosterman. “Every game single game will be important to us, and focus will be key.”
Key because the Mavericks are not eligible to play for a conference championship during their four-year transition to full Division I status. They won't play a full Summit League schedule until the 2012 season, but Klosterman says that hasn't dampened anyone's enthusiasm.
“Our players are really excited. Nearly everything is going to be new – the competition, the venues, the level of play. We just have to stay positive and enjoy the experience.”
