Mavs Set for Home Opener Against Northern Colorado

The Omaha women's soccer team plays its home openers this weekend when it hosts a pair of Big Sky schools. Northern Colorado will visit the UNO Soccer Field for a 3 p.m. match on Friday. That game is part of a women's and men's doubleheader, as the men host Grand Canyon at 5:30 p.m. that evening. Free hot dogs will be given out to the first 500 UNO students through the gate. UNO students get free admission to both the women's and men's games with their MavCard. In addition, any fans who bring soccer equipment to donate (cleats, soccer balls, shin guards, uniforms, socks) will receive $2 off admission. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, and one ticket purchased on Friday is good for both the women's and men's games. On Sunday, the Mavericks will host North Dakota at Noon. The Teams
The Mavericks dropped both games on their season-opening road trip last weekend. UNO started the season with a 3-1 loss at New Mexico State on Friday. Katlyn Nimtz scored a header off of an assist from Anna Sibson with 48 seconds left for the Mavs' first goal of the season. On Sunday, UNO fell 2-0 at UTEP. The Mavericks put a lot of players on the pitch in their first weekend. Overall, 21 players participated against New Mexico State, and 20 played double-digit minutes. Against UTEP, 17 Mavs entered the game.
Northern Colorado is 0-2 after a pair of 3-0 defeats to Colorado and Denver at the Colorado Cup last weekend. UNC earned a 3-1 win in the preseason over Metro State. Freshman forward Shanlie Anderson had a pair of goals for the Bears in that match. Northern Colorado was picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky preseason coaches' poll. Five Big Sky All-Conference team picks are back this season, including Goalkeeper of the Year Natalie D'Adamio.
North Dakota went 0-2 at its season-opening Boilermaker Challenge Cup last weekend in West Lafayette, Ind. UND dropped its opening match to Xavier, 3-0, last Friday, then fell 4-1 to Akron on Sunday. Matt Kellogg is in his first season as the head coach at North Dakota after spending the previous three seasons at Ferris State. He inherits a UND team that went 2-13-1 last season and 0-9 in the Big Sky. North Dakota played at Creighton on Friday as part of its Omaha road trip.
Series History
Northern Colorado leads the all-time series with UNO, 5-3. The squads have met each of the past two seasons in Greeley, Colo., with the Bears earning a one-goal victory both times. Last season, Northern Colorado claimed a 2-1 win on Sept. 2, 2012 with the game-winner coming shortly after halftime. Prior to 2011, the teams hadn't played since 2002, when UNO beat the Bears 5-1.
The Mavs are 13-4 all-time against North Dakota and have won the last six meetings. UNO last played North Dakota in the first year of the Mavs' Division I transition, earning a 2-1 win at UND on Sept. 16, 2011. Sarah Nordstrom had a goal in the win. The last time UND defeated Omaha was Oct. 28, 2005, 1-0 at the UNO Soccer Field. UNO is 7-2 at home against UND.
Last Time Out
The season-opening road trip for the Omaha women's soccer team came to an end on Sunday with a 2-0 loss at UTEP. The Miners (2-0) opened the scoring in the 12th minute. A long throw-in found the foot of Jade Babcock in the box, and Babcock slotted a ball to Angela Cutaia for a tap-in finish. UTEP doubled its lead in the 42nd minute when Tayler O'Hayre took a free kick from 45 yards away. O'Hayre's kick bounced in the box and hit the left post before rolling into the back of the net. The Miners outshot UNO 15-6 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal. Chelsi Rohloff and Jordyn Braun each had two shots on goal for UNO (0-2), as the Mavs struggled to break through the Miner defense. Meaghan Clark made seven saves for Omaha.
