Omaha WoMen's Soccer Opens Summit League Play

The Omaha women's soccer team opens Summit League play this weekend with a pair of games. Omaha opens the road trip in Vermillion, SD on Friday, Oct. 3 against South Dakota at 4 p.m. The Mavericks then travel to Denver, Colo. to take on the University of Denver on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
The Teams
Omaha (2-8-0, 0-0-0 Summit League) dropped a pair of games in Missouri over the weekend. The Mavs lost 2-1 to Missouri State on Thursday evening in Springfield, Ill. Chelsi Rohloff scored the only goal for UNO. On Sunday, the Mavs dropped a 4-2 decision to the University of Saint Louis. Chelsi Rohloff and Layla Ashouri each scored for Omaha. Haley Shelton had a career high 11 saves. Overall, Rohloff leads the team with six goals and two assists for 14 points. Anna Sibson has two goals and three assists for seven points. Courtney Neville has a goal and three assists for five points. UNO has used three keepers this season. Haley Shelton leads the team with over 640 minutes. Shelton has a 1-6-0 overall record. She has a .719 save percentage and a 2.24 goals against average. Katlyn Schochenmaier has a 1-1-0 record in 235 minutes. She has a .750 and a 1.91 goals against average. Meaghan Clark has played in one game with a 0-1-0 record and a .667 save percentage.
South Dakota (7-4-0, 0-0-0 Summit League) is coming off a 1-0 road win over Drake University. Sophomore Corey Strang scored the game-winning goal for the Coyotes last Wednesday at Cownie Stadium in Des Moines. Drake actually outshot USD 15-13 and had more corner kicks 4-1. South Dakota has won three straight games, since their 3-1 loss to Creighton on Sept. 14 in Omaha. Taylor Nivala leads the team with eight goals and an assist for 17 points. Rebecca Sparkman has four goals and three assists for 11 points. Corey Strang and Lauren Bennett each have four assists. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor has started all 11 games for the Coyotes and is 6-4-0 overall. Viktor has a .703 save percentage and a 1.23 goals against average. Sydney Hardin has the other win for USD and has made five saves.
Denver (4-5-1, 0-0-0 Summit League) lost 4-2 on Thursday, September 25 to Brigham Young University at home. BYU is receiving votes in the latest NSCAA Poll. BYU scored the game's first goal in the fourth minute, but Francesca Garzelloni evened the score at 1-1 in the 12th minute. BYU would score in the 40th, 53rd, and 59th minute to put the game out of reach. The Pioneers are led by Jocelyn Loomis. Loomis has three goals and two assists for right points. Taylor Ivins has two goals and an assist for five points. Anna Willis has two goals. Goalkeeper Cassidy Rey has a 3-5-1 record with a .698 save percentage. She has a 1.45 goals against average. Tina Vargas is 1-0-0 on the season with a .500 save percentage and a 2.01 goals against average.
Series History
This will be the 16th meeting between Omaha and South Dakota. The Mavericks own an impressive 15-0 mark against the Coyotes. Last season, Omaha defeated USD 2-0 at home. Ava Doetsch and Chelsi Rohloff each scored goals.
Denver and Omaha met for the first time last season in Omaha. Denver game away with a 3-0 victory.
Last Time Out
The Omaha women's soccer team lost a 4-2 road decision to Saint Louis University on Saturday afternoon in Saint Louis, Mo. Omaha is now 2-8 on the season. Saint Louis improves to 5-5 with the win.
Omaha scored the first goal of the game. Chelsi Rohloff gathered a pass from Kyla Booker and laced a shot from 20 yards away from the goal that found the back of the net just 4:32 into the game. The lead was short lived as Saint Louis answered with a game tying goal at the 8:01 mark in the first half. The Billikins took a 2-1 lead at the 34:54 mark in the first half.
Saint Louis scored on a header in the 52nd minute to take a 3-1 lead. The Billikins got behind the Maverick defense with under ten minutes left to go in the game to score their fourth goal of the game. Layla Ashouri scored her first goal of the season in the 90th minute to make the final score 4-2.
Chelsi Rohloff had a team high four shots and a goal. Layla Ashouri and Kyla Booker had the other two shots for Omaha. Haley Shelton faced 29 shots and made 11 saves.

Omaha plays a pair of games over the weekend. On Friday, Oct. 10, the Mavericks host North Dakota State at 7:00 p.m. in a Summit League match-up. Then on Sunday, October 12, UNO steps out of conference as they travel to Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
