Omaha Sweeps Grambling State to Conclude Spring Break Trip

GRAMBLING, La. – The Omaha women's tennis team swept its doubleheader against Grambling State on Wednesday, winning 5-0 and 4-3 to conclude its spring break trip. With the wins, the Mavericks improved to 7-8 (0-1 Summit League) on the season.
OMAHA 5, GRAMBLING STATE 0
In the opening match, Omaha secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. At No. 1, sophomore Michelle Lo and junior Hylan Miller defeated Phonephathep Philavvong/Tafadzwa Chiridza, 6-1. At No. 3, junior Kenzie Hill and freshman Hannah Hills won by default. And at the No. 2 slot, senior Molly Matricardi and freshman Janelle Wilson were up 4-3, but the match went unfinished when Omaha clinched the doubles point.
The Mavericks swept singles play to lock in the 5-0 victory. Miller, at No. 2, and Matricardi, at No. 3, won by identical scores of 6-0, 6-1. At No. 4, Hill defeated Tafadzwa Chiridza, 6-1, 6-2. To conclude the scoring, junior Allison Johnson won at No. 6 by default. Lo and Hills went unfinished at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively.
OMAHA 4, GRAMBLING STATE 3
In the second match, UNO won the doubles point in similar fashion, picking up victories in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Lo and Miller defeated Philavvong/Tafadzwa at No. 1, 6-1, to improve their doubles record to 8-2 on the season. At No. 3, the pair of Hill and Hills won by default, which clinched the doubles point for the Mavs.
Omaha and Grambling State split singles competition three matches apiece, to seal the Mavericks' 4-3 victory. Johnson was victorious at No. 3 over Tanyaradzwa Magunje, 6-2, 7-5. Redshirt freshman Rachel Skolaski notched her first career victory as a Maverick, competing at the No. 5 singles position as she won by the withdrawal of Anastaysa Reshetnickova. Junior Rebecca Stafford also won by default at No. 6 to secure the match for UNO.
Omaha returns home on Saturday, April 2, welcoming College of Saint Mary and Northwestern (Iowa) at Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Center.
