Kammrad, Mavs Clear Augustana Hurdle, 28-14
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Justin Kammrad ran for 211 yards Saturday to lead the Mavericks to a 28-14 North Central Conference win over Augustana College in front of 2,007 fans at Howard Wood Field. Kammrad, in rolling up the 11th-best rushing total in a game by a Maverick, became the 10th player in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season, pushing his total to 1,152 and set a school record with his seventh straight game over 100 yards.
The No. 18 Mavericks improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the NCC with the win while Augustana fell to 2-5 and 0-4.
UNO grabbed the early lead by sweeping 80 yards in just five plays in their first possession with quarterback Brian Masek passing 28 yards to Ryan Krause for the score less than five minutes into the game.
The Vikings put together their only sustained drive of the game to tie early in the second quarter when running back Ryan Ovenden punched over from the one to cap an 11-play, 75-yard march after taking over at the UNO 25 following a missed field goal.
Masek guided UNO 76 yards in 13 plays to give the Mavs a 14-7 halftime lead on wide receiver Chris Denney's outstanding catch on a 26-yard pass play with 1:05 left before the break.
The Vikings tied the game in the third quarter despite getting only 20 yards of offense to UNO's 131 by taking advantage of a blocked punt. Allen Pudwill broke through to smother UNO freshman Don Grafton's kick and give the Vikings the ball on the UNO 12. Quarterback Ryan DeGraff passes one yard to tight end Justin Sheppard for the score.
Masek led a 78-yard drive that gobbled up 5:39, scoring on a three-yard run, to give the Mavericks the lead for good. The touchdown, on the 14th play of the drive, came 51 seconds into the fourth quarter.
The Vikings couldn't penetrate inside the UNO 42 on their next two possessions before the Mavs took over on downs and put the game out of reach on freshman tailback Scott Anderson's 29-yard touchdown run with 3:02 left in the game.
UNO outgained the Vikings 450-233 in total offense, including a 333-117 edge in rushing.
Kammrad's 211 yards came on a career-high 34 carries. It was his second career 200-yard plus game. His first, a school-record 239-yard performance, also came against Augustana, in 2000. Masek added 50 yards on 15 carries and completed 8 of 15 passes for 141 yards. Krause had three catches for 84 yards and Denney three grabs for 54 yards.
