Mavericks Upset USD in Season Finale

Vermillion, S.D. -- Four players collected double-figure kills as Nebraska-Omaha upset South Dakota 3-1 (30-21, 30-28, 26-30, 30-24) in North Central Conference volleyball action Thursday night, Nov. 13, before 364 fans at the DakotaDome.
Junior outside hitter Jenny Rankin led the Mavericks with 20 kills, 24 digs and 3 blocks. Junior outside hitter Amy McLeay recorded her 20th double-double of the season, registering 13 kills and a season-high 27 digs. Other Mavericks with double-figure kill totals included junior rightside hitter Julia McConahay (11) and sophomore middle blocker Ashley Freeman (10).
Junior libero Chelsea Miller was the third Maverick to record over 20 digs. Her 23 defensive saves helped Nebraska-Omaha tally a season-high 116 digs in the victory.
UNO held the Coyotes to a .100 hitting percentage, as the Mavericks forced USD into 30 hitting errors and held a 19 to 9 advantage in blocks.
With the victory, the Mavericks ended the 2003 season with a 12-18 overall record and a 3-11 mark in the NCC. South Dakota, which came into the match ranked No. 6 in the latest North Central Region rankings, fell to 18-10 overall and 8-6 in the NCC. The top six teams in the Region advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament next week.
