South Dakota Rallies To Upset Mavericks

Vermillion, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota overcame a 2-0 deficit in games to defeat the 23rd-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks 27-30, 25-30, 30-25, 30-24, 15-11 on Saturday, Oct. 9, before a crowd of 157 at the DakotaDome.
The Mavericks (12-6, 3-2 NCC) were led by freshman Carlie Christensen who belted 17 kills and hit .359 with only three errors in 39 attempts. She also added a match-high three service aces. Junior setter Christie Johnson recorded a double-double with 65 assists and 16 digs. She also added a career-high seven kills while hitting .500 with no errors in 14 attempts, and registered two service aces.
Joining Christensen in double-digits for kills were four other Mavericks including Amy McLeay (16), Ashley Freeman (14), Jenny Rankin (11), and Briana Ritter (10). Nebraska-Omaha held a 79 to 68 advantage in kills and outhit the Coyotes .205 to .203 in the match.
Defensively, the Mavericks recorded a season-high 120 digs with three Mavericks tallying over 20 digs. Sophomore Stacie Wemhoff recorded a career-high 23 digs, while junior Chelsea Miller added 22 and senior Julia McConahay had 21.
The Coyotes (11-9, 3-1 NCC) were led by Kristen Miller who had a match-high 19 kills and 22 digs and Lindsey Soukup who registered 16 kills and a match-high 30 digs.
The Mavericks return to action next Saturday, Oct. 16 when they play host to North Dakota beginning at 6 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse.
