Shires Signs Norris High School Standout

University of Nebraska at Omaha head volleyball coach Rose Shires announced today the signing of 5-11 outside hitter Shelly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Norris HS/Nebraska Juniors) to North Central Conference and national letters of intent to attend UNO in the fall of 2005.
Thompson was a two-time Class B all-state honoree at Norris High School under coach Christina Boesiger and was named captain of the Beatrice Daily Sun volleyball squad. She was also a four-time all-Eastern Midlands Conference selection.
"Shelly has a great work ethic and is committed to winning," said Shires. "I really feel like she has the ability to come in and contribute right away as a freshman. She has a high swing with a good snap and is a very good place-shot hitter."
Thompson, who was a member of Norris' 2002 Nebraska Class B state runnerup team, is also an excellent student, earning academic all-state honors and being named to the Honor Roll all four years.
Thompson played club volleyball for the Nebraska Juniors under coach Jason Owens, where she helped lead her team to a fifth place finish at the 2004 USA Junior Olympics.
"Although she played middle blocker throughout her high school and club careers, we plan on using Shelly on the outside to take advantage of her outstanding ball control and versatility," added Shires.
Thompson was also a three-time all-conference selection in basketball and earned second team all-state honors her junior season.
Thompson is the daughter of Lyle and Donna Thompson.
The 2004 Mavericks graduate four seniors; outside hitters Amy McLeay, Jenny Rankin, and Julia McConahay, as well as middle blocker Andrea Wegner.
Nebraska-Omaha (15-9/5-5 NCC) will close out the regular season this weekend when they travel to eighth-ranked Minnesota Duluth on Friday, Nov. 12 for a 7 p.m. contest with the Bulldogs. UNO will then head to Mankato, Minn. for a 7 p.m. match with Minnesota State on Saturday, Nov. 13.
