No. 16 Mavs Set to Battle Augustana at NCAA II Reg

The University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team has qualified for the NCAA II North Central Regional to be held on the campus of Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn. The Mavericks (21-6) enter the Regional as the tournament's No. 3 seed for the third-straight season. UNO will take on the No. 6 seed Augustana (14-13) in the the tournament's first round beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9.
It marks the 16th time in school history and the eighth time in the Rose Shires' era that the Mavericks have qualified for the NCAA II Tournament. The winner of the North Central Regional will advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight on Nov. 16-19 in Pensacola, Fla.

The Record
The Mavericks are currently 21-6 on the season. UNO finished in a tie for second in the NCC standings at 8-4 after winning a pair of matches last week. UNO defeated Augustana 3-0 (30-21, 30-27, 30-28) last Tuesday and St. Cloud State 3-0 (30-22, 30-26, 30-26) on Saturday. The Mavericks have now won six straight and 10 out of their last 11 matches.
The Rankings
In the CSTV/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll released on Nov. 6, Nebraska-Omaha was ranked No. 16. Minnesota Duluth is the only other NCC school ranked as they enter this week's competition at No. 5.
Trio Named to Academic All-NCC Squad
Seniors Christina Reicks and Stacie Wemhoff and junior Katie Agnew were named to the 2006 academic all-North Central Conference volleyball team in a vote by league sports information directors.
Reicks (Bellevue, Neb.), who is a two-time selection on the 17-member squad, holds a 3.827 cumulative GPA in elementary education. Wemhoff (Humphrey, Neb.), has a 3.332 GPA in exercise science. Agnew (Omaha, Neb.), has a 3.466 GPA in business.
Three Mavs Earn All-NCC, Thommes Freshman of the Year
Three Mavericks were named to the 2006 all-North Central Conference volleyball first team in a vote by league coaches, while Ellen Thommes was tabbed the NCC Freshman of the Year.
Senior outside hitter Christina Reicks and junior middle blocker Carlie Christensen were both named to the first team for a second-straight season. Junior Nicole McLeod earned her first all-NCC honor.
Reicks leads this year's squad with 18 double-doubles. She finished seventh in the NCC with 3.64 kills per game and leads the team with 349 kills and is second with 388 digs. Reicks earned NCC Defensive Player of the Week honors three times in 2006.
Christensen led the NCC in blocks (1.34 bpg), ranked second in hitting % (.367), and was eighth in kills (3.61 kpg). She currently leads the Mavericks in blocks (1.19 bpg) and hitting % (.376) and is second in kills (3.58 kpg).
McLeod is second on the team with a .323 hitting percentage, while averaging 2.43 kills and 0.71 digs per game. She ranked seventh in the NCC with a .306 hitting percentage and eighth with 0.84 blocks per game.
Thommes is third on the team with 238 kills and a .298 hitting percentage. She is second with 0.82 blocks per game. In the final NCC stats, Thommes ranked fourth in hitting % (.326), 11th in blocks (0.77 bpg), 12th in service aces (0.23), and 14th in kills (2.91 kpg).
Senior libero Stacie Wemhoff earned honorable mention all-NCC honors while leading the Mavericks with 500 digs which ranks 6th on the UNO single-season records chart. She finished second in the NCC with 5.41 digs per game and eighth with 0.27 service aces per game.
