Marcia Kruger Establishes Volleyball Scholarship

OMAHA, Neb. - Marcia Kruger of Omaha recently made a gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation to create the Marcia Kruger Volleyball Scholarship. This gift creates the largest endowed scholarship in women's athletics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Marcia Kruger, a longtime supporter of UNO athletics, saw this scholarship as an opportunity to encourage women to experience volleyball while also promoting support for women's athletics.
When Kruger attended high school, volleyball was only a gym class. She added that she wishes her gym team could have had more public support.
"I often wondered if we put all the good players together on one team how good or bad we could have been," Kruger said. "We were never given the opportunity. Girls' athletics were not important then."
The scholarship will be awarded to members of UNO's volleyball team as determined by the head coach and the athletic director this fall. Rose Shires, UNO's head volleyball coach, holds high standards for future recipients of the Marcia Kruger Volleyball Scholarship.
"The recipient will be an individual who possesses the characteristics of Marcia Kruger. She must be a tenacious, goal-oriented young woman," she said.
Shires also believes this scholarship will positively affect the future of the volleyball team.
"The Marcia Kruger Volleyball Scholarship allows us to recruit not only great athletes, but also shows our recruits and team the support from the community," Shires said.
UNO athletic director, David Miller agrees with Shires. "Our most important function is educating our student athletes, and this gift will allow for a lasting legacy in this endeavor," Miller said.
Shires, who has been the head coach since 1990 and has led her team seven times to the NCAA Division II tournament, said the 2007 volleyball team is focusing on winning the North Central Conference, making it to the NCAA tournament and finishing in the top 10 in the country. She also added that the team plans to achieve a cumulative GPA of a 3.6 or higher.
