Mavs Drop Heartbreaker at No. 22 UNK

KEARNEY, Neb. -- The 22nd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team pulled out a dramatic 30-25, 30-28, 26-30, 20-30, 17-15 victory over the 21st-ranked UNO Mavericks before 2,301 fans at the Health & Sports Center in non-conference action Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 8-6 on the season, while the Lopers improve to 14-3 overall.
Sara Kampschnieder led four Maverick players in double-figure kills with a career-high 18 kills on .302 hitting. Carlie Christensen added 15 kills and eight blocks. Kelli Goeser had 14 kills and nine digs and Ellen Thommes contributed with 13 kills, eight digs and five blocks.
Katie Agnew recorded her team-leading ninth double-double with 56 assists and 15 digs to go along with two service aces and two blocks.
The Mavericks led 8-2 in the decisive fifth game before the Lopers went on their own 8-2 run to knot the game at 10. The Lopers then took four of the next six points to lead 14-12. Kills by Christensen and Kampschnieder saved two Loper match points as UNO tied the game at 14. After an attack error by Kampschnieder, a missed serve by the Lopers' Steph Hoemann helped the Mavs save their third match point, tying the game at 15. However, kills by UNK's Shannon Clausen and Kelsey Werner gave the Lopers the marathon victory. It was Werner's first kill of the match.
Annie Rice led the UNO defensive effort with a career-high 35 digs as UNO recorded a season-high 127 digs. Liz Ingram added 20 digs, while Nicole McLeod and Kayla Jansen registered 17 each.
The Mavericks will return home on Friday, Sept. 28 for a North Central Conference match with South Dakota beginning at 7 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse.
