Mavs On Track with Sweep of Southwest Baptist

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO volleyball team nabbed its second win of the weekend, sweeping Southwest Baptist -- 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 – at Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday night. With the victory, the Mavericks are 14-11 (4-9 MIAA) on the year, while Southwest Baptist is 8-16 (3-9 MIAA).
Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Ebke and senior outside hitter Kayla Uhing were an offensive force for the Mavs, combining for 31 of the team's 46 kills for the evening. Ebke had 16 kills on .387 hitting, while Uhing chipped in 15 on a .452 performance.
Freshman setter Miranda Wisehart's 38 assists helped Nebraska-Omaha to a .198 team attack percentage, and junior libero Angie Reicks totaled 19 digs. Junior middle blocker Brittany Hanssen led the way at the net with five blocks.
The Mavs outhit Southwest Baptist in every set, including .200 in the first set, when they also held the Bearcats offense at .057. Ebke and Uhing accounted for five kills in eight attempts apiece, with Uhing committing no attack errors. UNO took a 12-4 lead before two straight kills by SBU's Ashley Jurgensmeyer. Ebke mixed in two kills of her own, making it 15-8. The Bearcats never came within more than four – at 18-14 – and a final kill by Uhing put it away at 25-18.
In game two, Nebraska-Omaha hit an identical .200 as a squad and made quick work with a 4-0 advantage. Southwest Baptist tied it up on four consecutive points, then again at 5-5, but the Mavericks rattled off an 8-1 run to take a solid lead. A block assist by Jurgensmeyer and Britni Reed brought the Bearcats to 18-14, and Ebke and Reed traded kills up to 20-15. Following an SBU timeout, UNO struck for three straight kills, which was countered by two SBU kills paired with three UNO errors to make it 23-20. Southwest came within one, but the Mavs seized on two last Bearcat errors to earn the 25-22 win.
The final set saw Uhing tack on seven kills to lead UNO to a close victory. With the Mavs of 20-16, two UNO errors, coupled with three straight kills by SBU's Kylie Heim, put the Bearcats ahead 21-20. Nebraska-Omaha tied it at 22-22 with a Uhing kill, and back-to-back points by Ebke and Hanssen brought the game to match point. Heim added one more kill to make it 24-23, but Ebke's last kill of the evening finished it off at 25-23.
SBU was led by Joanna Granzow, who had six kills, and Jurgensmeyer and Reed, who had five apiece. The Mavs kept their opponent off balance, with no Bearcat hitting hit over .158 for the night.
UNO returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 26, hosting Washburn at Sapp Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
