NORMAN, Okla. – Despite another solid blocking effort, the Omaha volleyball team dropped a 3-0 loss to Miami (Fla.) by set scores of 22-25, 19-25, 19-25 at the Nike Invitational at McCasland Field House on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 4-8 (0-0 Summit League), while the Hurricanes improve to 6-2 (0-0 ACC).
Freshman Kristy Wieser led UNO with six kills, while sophomore Kelley Wollak chipped in five kills with a team-leading 14 digs. Sophomore Kimberly Bailey also had a double-figure dig showing with 12.
Sophomore Michaela Schimmer finished with 11 assists, seven digs, two blocks and two kills for the day. Sophomores Diane Banderas and Amy Taylor and junior Jessy Schroedter matched Schimmer with two kills apiece, and sophomore Megan Schmale paced the Mavericks at the net with three stops.
As a team, Omaha outblocked Miami, 8-4, and held the Hurricanes to .174 hitting with 20 attack errors.
UM was led by Savannah Leaf's 12 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while Alex Johnson totaled 10 kills and nine digs. Setter Blair Fuentez finished with 36 assists.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 for the final day of the Nike Invitational, facing LIU Brooklyn at 12:30 p.m. and Tulsa at 4:30 p.m. at McCasland Field House. Live stats will be available for both matches on OMavs.com.
