Volleyball Q&A Preview Series: Setters/Rightsides

OMAHA, Neb. -- With the start of the 2015 volleyball season less than a month away, head coach Rose Shires has begun a four-part Q&A series on OMavs.com to provide an outlook of her team as it prepares for its first Division I year with full NCAA postseason eligibility. This week, Shires previews the Mavericks' setters and rightside hitters.
OMavs.com: Setters are often compared to quarterbacks out on the court. What's your take on that comparison?
Shires: "The setter is the director of the offense. She will call a set play or use audibles to change the set play based on the opponent's blocking scheme. The setter dictates the offensive production of the team. A good setter with great hitters equals a good team. A great setter with good hitters equals a great team. The setter should be extremely athletic, have good foot speed and a great volleyball IQ."
OMavs.com: What do you consider a rightside's most important job and why?
Shires: "Some coaches will say the most important role of their rightside is blocking. While I do believe that your rightside should be an extremely effective blocker, I also place a BIG emphasis that our rightside should be one of our most dominating attackers."
OMavs.com: Based on what you've seen since the 2014 season ended, tell us what to expect from each rightside and setter.
Shires: "Nicki Carson is a tremendous athlete who can impact the game as both a setter and rightside hitter. She's a dynamic jumper and a strong left-handed attacker who has focused on a variety of shots to elevate her game. Nicki is also a great attacking setter who can effectively run the offense.
"Michaela Schimmer is a powerful, fast attacker who is a tremendous threat for us on the rightside. Michaela will put up a huge block and be a go-to hitter for us in her senior season. She is also a multi-position player, serving as one of our team's setters.
"Meagen Roth, one of our incoming freshmen, hits a very heavy attack and will be a dynamic player for us. She is a very good blocker who takes up a tremendous amount of space.
"And last but not least, Sydney O'Shaughnessy is back for her sophomore season. She's a quick, dynamic athlete who delivers a consistent set to all our hitters. Sydney has a great mind for the game of volleyball and directs the team and the offense very well. Sydney has worked very hard developing into an attacking setter and quickening up our offense in the offseason."
