ELMHURST, Ill. – Xavier Gomez has been named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week, and goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis has been named Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Gomez captured his first career offensive player of the week award. He played a part in both Omaha goals in Saturday's 2-0 win over Oral Roberts. Gomez scored the game-winning goal in the 16th minute and assisted on Elvir Ibisevic's insurance goal in the 88th minute of the match. He leads the league with eight assists and is third with 16 points this season.
Ghitis earned his eighth career Defensive Player of the Week honor, second-most in Summit League history, and second weekly award of the season. He collected four saves in a 2-0 shutout win over Oral Roberts. The shutout was fourth of the season and 15th of his career. With the win, Omaha clinched a spot in the upcoming Summit League Tournament.
Denver's Alex Underwood shared Offensive Player of the Week accolades with Gomez, while the Pioneer's Nick Gardner shared Defensive honors with Ghitis.
Omaha hosts this weekend's Summit League Men's Soccer Tournament. No. 3-seeded Omaha will take on No. 2-seeded Western Illinois on Thursday, Nov. 9 in the semifinals set to kickoff at 5 p.m. The winner will take on the winner of No. 1 Denver and No. 4 Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m.
