Omaha Surges Past North Dakota To Remain Unbeaten In League Play

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha volleyball program remained perfect in league play with a 3-1 win over North Dakota Friday evening.

The Mavericks (10-7, 5-0 Summit League) defeated the Fighting Hawks in four sets (25-19, 20-25, 25-11, 28-26) and also improved to 6-0 at home this season.

Leaders For Omaha
Sadie Limback led the way with a team-best 16 kills along with seven digs. Three other Mavericks recorded double-digit kills in Claire Leonard (14), Abby Bergsten (12) and Anna Blaschko (12). Sydney Case recorded 55 assists, which marks her seventh match this season of 50 or more.

Omaha's 5-0 conference start is the best in the Division I era and best since 2009 (started 5-0 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) in 2009).
The Mavericks improve to 6-0 at home this season, the best start in the Division I era and best since 2009 (started 12-0).
Omaha improves to 45-13 all-time against North Dakota.

Inside Set 1
Omaha pulled together a 5-0 run early in the opening set to lead 13-8. From there, the Mavericks led by as many as seven (23-16) before they capped off the final two points of the set with another Leonard kill and a North Dakota service error.

Inside Set 2
The Mavericks rattled off three straight points to open the set, but the Fighting Hawks responded to even it all up. Down two, Omaha put together a 3-0 spurt and led 16-15 off a North Dakota attack error. The Mavericks eventually found themselves with a 20-19 lead after Bergsten recorded a kill, but the Fighting Hawks took the set off six straight points to even the match at 1-1.

Once again, a strong start proved to help the Mavericks down the stretch. Omaha immediately put the Fighting Hawks in a 5-0 deficit that was capped off by a service ace from Courtney Morehead. The Mavericks eventually pulled ahead by 10 (15-5) to force a timeout after back-to-back kills from Bergsten and a kill by Blaschko. The lead increased to double digits as Omaha cruised to a 25-11 second set win.

Inside Set 4
Down three early on, Omaha put together a massive 6-0 run and led 10-7 in the match. That was followed by another 4-0 spurt which made it 15-9 Mavericks. North Dakota called timeout and regrouped. Out of the break, the Fighting Hawks went on a 9-2 run and eventually tie the score at 18-all. Late in the match, both teams traded points and Omaha fell into a three-point hole (24-21). With set point for North Dakota on the line, Omaha rallied together three straight points and capped the run off by a monstrous kill from Blaschko. North Dakota answered and led 26-25, but Omaha gritted out three straight points off a pair of UND errors and a kill by Bergsten to take match point.

Omaha makes a quick trip up to Vermillion, S.D. on Friday, Oct. 12 to face South Dakota at 7 p.m. The Mavericks follow with a pair of matches in Baxter Arena against Oral Roberts (Oct. 14) and Denver (Oct. 16) at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
