Mavericks Eye NCC Showdown at North Dakota
The eyes of the North Central Conference will be on the Mavericks Saturday as they challenge North Dakota for the league lead at Grand Forks. UNO, ranked Nos. 17 and 18 and No. 6 in the region, enters the game at 7-2 and 4-1 in the NCC. North Dakota, ranked No. 1 in the region and as high as No. 9 in NCAA II, is 7-1 and 5-0. Kickoff at the 13,500-seat Alerus Center is at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast locally on KKAR, 1290 am, and in the Columbus area on KJSK, 900 am.
Maverick senior tailback Justin Kammrad needs just 25 yards to set a school single-season rushing record. Kammrad was named the NCC's co-offensive player of the week and Nebraska NCAA II player of the week a second straight time after running for 205 yards in last week's 39-36 win over St. Cloud State.
Freshman placekicker Andy Severson also was honored as the NCC's special teams player of the week. Severson booted field goals of 32 and 39 yards in helping the Mavs recover from a 21-10 first half deficit.
Senior cornerback Brandon Pinderhughes was named the Nebraska NCAA II defensive player of the week after his 16-tackle performance. Pinderhughes also set up two Maverick touchdowns with a fumble recovery and a pass interception.
