KEARNEY, Neb. -- Sophomore Sim Bribieseca won the 141-pound title, while redshirt freshman Aaron Denson (165) and junior Tony Lewis (285) both placed second to lead the Mavericks Saturday at the UNK Loper Open.
Bribeseca went 4-0 on the day, defeating All-American Jeff Rutledge of Nebraska-Kearney, 3-2, in the championship match. He defeated three-time All-American Adam Keiswetter, a former wrestler and current coach at UNK, in the semifinals, 5-3.
Denson was 4-1 on the day with his only loss, a 9-7 setback to defending national champion Brett Hunter of Chadron State in the 165-pound title bout.
Lewis went 3-1, losing 5-4 in the championship match to two-time All-American Jon Madsden, formerly of Augustana who wrestled unattached.
Sophomore Cody Garcia (133), wrestling unattached, recorded the most falls in least amount of time with four falls in total time of 6:02 with the fastest coming in 49 seconds. He won the title at 133 pounds, going 5-0 in the tournament.
With both wrestlers competing unattached, junior Todd Meneely edged freshman Esai Dominguez, 6-4, to claim the championship at 149 pounds. Meneely finished the tournament with a 4-0 record while Dominguez was 3-1.
