3 Mavericks Move to Semifinals
KEARNEY, Neb. -- Todd Meneely, JD Naig and Austin Boehm advanced to the semifinal round Friday night as the Mavericks moved into fourth place in the NCAA Division II wrestling tournament at the Health and Sports Center.
The Mavericks are in fourth place behind first-day leader Central Oklahoma, which has 70 points and seven wrestlers in the semifinals. UNO has 37.5 points.
The only other Maverick still active in wrestleback matches on Saturday is Siim Bribieseca at 141, who advanced on an injury default in overtime over Matt Irwin of Indianapolis.
Ross Taplin, 165; Jacob Marrs, 197; Jeff Rau, 133, and heavyweight Tony Lewis each lost in consolation round matches Friday night.
Meneely improved his record to 33-3 with a major decision, 15-4, over No. 4 Don Cummings of Mercyhurst at 149. Meneely's next opponent is Shea Timothy of Central Oklahoma.
Naig scored a 7-2 decision at 174 over No. 4 ranked Zach Schafer of Mercyhurst in pursuit of his third national title. He's now 42-7 and will face No. 8 ranked Larry Wilbanks of Western State.
Boehm won his second straight match with a quick pin, earning a fall in just 28 seconds over Charlie Pipher of Western State and will meet No. 5 ranked Mark Murphy of Shippensburg Saturday.
