Mavs Cruise to 3-1 Win Behind Ebke's Career Night

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO volleyball team snapped a five-game losing streak on Friday night, defeating Pittsburg State 3-1 at Sapp Fieldhouse with scores of 25-14, 17-25, 25-18, 25-2. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 13-11 (3-9 MIAA), while PSU dropped to 8-14 (2-9 MIAA).
Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Ebke led the attack with a career-high 19 kills paired with 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Freshman outside hitter Abby Sorensen also finished in double figures with a career-best 17 kills on .412 hitting with three blocks, while freshman middle hitter Megan Hutson had eight kills and a team-leading six blocks for a career-high mark.
Freshman setter Miranda Wisehart, making just her second career appearance, totaled 53 assists in leading the Mavs to a .258 team hitting performance. Her performance also marked the highest assists total of any Maverick this season and is the best figure since junior Emily Myers' 60 assists at Missouri Western on Nov. 6, 2009.
Wisehart, junior libero Angie Reicks and senior outside hitter Kayla Uhing tallied 15 digs apiece, and Uhing added nine kills. Junior middle blocker Brittany Hanssen also contributed eight kills for her part.
UNO outhit Pitt State .444 to .069 to take game one. The Mavericks recorded 18 kills, led by Ebke's mark of six, while no Gorilla hitter had more than two kills in the first set. Nebraska-Omaha jumped out to a 7-2 lead, eventually extending the advantage to a dominant 22-11 with back-to-back kills by Hutson. The freshman also tacked on the final kill of the game, finishing off Pittsburg State at 25-14.
PSU led from the beginning of the second set, going up 8-3. The Mavs nearly evened the score at 10-9, but two straight kills by Lauren Brentlinger kept a tie elusive. UNO came within one again by capitalizing on a pair of Gorilla errors to make it 16-15, but four Maverick errors with only one kill in the subsequent span extended the lead by UNO's timeout at 16-20. Brentlinger added another kill, and two more Nebraska-Omaha errors resulted in a seven-point margin, and despite a kill by Hutson, Pittsburg State took the victory at 25-17 to even the match.
The Gorillas kept their game two momentum heading into the third set, going up 5-1. UNO came storming back to tie it at 8-8 with back-to-back kills by Uhing and Hutson, and the game stalled with five more ties. Multiple PSU errors helped the Mavericks claim the lead, going ahead by three. Two Brentlinger kills brought the Gorillas within one, but two straight kills by Hanssen and another by Ebke made it 22-18. A service ace by Wisehart and a final kill by Sorensen gave Nebraska-Omaha the 25-18 win and a 2-1 advantage.
Ebke was the offensive leader again in the last game with seven kills, and Uhing's .571 hitting with four kills also helped the Mavericks outhit the Gorillas .234 to .050. Defensively, the Mavs outdug Pittsburg State 24 to 17, and the effort gave UNO a 25-21 win as well as the match victory by a 3-1 score.
Pittsburg State had two players finish in double-figure kills –Brentlinger (11) and Corrinne Stringer (10) – and libero Cassie Wilson chipped in 19 digs. The Gorillas hit .119 for the night.
UNO returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 23, hosting Southwest Baptist at Sapp Fieldhouse at 5 p.m.
